Feel safe and secure

Most working adults in Denmark are members of a union or an unemployment insurance fund. It’s a great way to get help and support in your professional life, as well as having a financial safety net.

The Danish labour market

Many things in the Danish labour market are regulated not by law, but through collective agreements between employer associations and trade unions. This is often called ‘The Danish model’, which is good to know, and one of many reasons to be part of a union.

Our typical members from abroad

Students coming to Denmark to study often join HK – and for good reason. Membership of HK’s union is free for most students. This could mean you, which would be nice, right?

An unemployment insurance fund offers you financial security in the labor market. If you are without a job for a period of time, as a member of an unemployment insurance fund, you are entitled to receive unemployment benefits if you meet the requirements. It is the unemployment insurance fund that pays unemployment benefits when you are unemployed, as well as holiday benefits and early retirement pay.

If you become unemployed, we offer qualified advice on job search and how to improve skills. One in two members of HK’s unemployment insurance fund is back working within 3 months.

When you are in a job, we are also there for you to strengthen your position in the labor market. This can be through courses on anything from salary negotiation, and leadership to personal development.

A trade union is a professional community where you can get help, guidance and legal advice regarding your worklife. As a member of HK you also get free access to courses and events, discounts on insurance, and other membership benefits. We know your profession, your education and the challenges you may face in your job - e.g. conflicts, work environment, salary and other working conditions. It's worth noting that salary, vacation, working hours, maternity rules, etc. are not regulated by laws. These are all decided upon in collective agreements between workplaces and trade unions. Every day,

HK works for better pay and working conditions for approx. 218,000 members. When you are part of HK, you are part of this community.

Your membership price depends on whether you want to join both the trade union and the unemployment fund and whether you have a full-time or part-time job, and finally, which sector your kind of work belongs to.

The price range for full-time membership is DKK 463-1,028 and for part-time membership DKK 270-712 per. month.

For students under the age of 30, the price is generally DKK 0. The price of DKK 0 applies if your education is standardized for a period of at least 18 months – it does not apply to HHX, HTX, STX and similar youth vocational training. If you receive other public benefits than SU (State Educational Grant), or if your total annual income is higher than DKK 231,864 (2021 amount), membership is not free.

Please also note, that a price for wage insurance of between DKK 44-98 can also be added (assuming that you are a member of both our trade union and our unemployment fund). In addition, there may also be a supplement to the local HK member club at your workplace.

We calculate the price according to the type of membership you want.

Example: You are 32 years old, employed full time as an office assistant in a private company full time and want both unemployment insurance fund and to be a member of the trade union. Your price is:

  • Trade union: DKK 463
  • Unemployment insurance: DKK 517
  • Mandatory wage insurance: DKK 98
  • A total of DKK 1,078 per month.

You can choose to add Full-time accident insurance for DKK 45 and Certain critical illnesses Insurance for DKK 59 per. month.

You recieve a tax deduction for your HK membership fee. The following can be deducted:

  • Up to DKK 6,000 per year in membership fees to the union and local club in the workplace.
  • The entire amount paid to the unemployment insurance fund.
  • The entire amount paid to the early retirement benefit fund.
  • The entire amount of wage insurance via HK Privat, HK Kommunal or HK Stat.

As a rule of thumb, the deduction is approx. 1/3 of the price of your membership fee.

Tax reporting happens automatically – you do not need to do anything.
HK automatically reports your tax deduction, so you do not have to do anything. The money will automatically be refunded with your tax return for next year. If you want the deduction effective immediately, you can report membership fees in your advance statement on skat.dk.

Read more about tax deductions for trade union and unemployment fund at www.skat.dk
