What is LinkedIn?

LinkedIn is an online professional network where you can show others your professional skills, search for knowledge and a professional network, find your next job – or be found yourself.

Visit LinkedIn

Five good reasons why you should be active on LinkedIn

  1. You can nurture and develop your professional network.
  2. You get an overview of who you know – and who your contacts know. Perhaps you are only one click away from a relevant contact for your dream job?
  3. A well-prepared profile increases your chances of being discovered and headhunted for a new job.
  4. You can increase your visibility and establish yourself as a resourceful person in a professional area by sharing professionally relevant contents, participating in discussions and posting brief articles.
  5. You can obtain professional knowledge in your particular areas of interest by following organisations, companies, public institutions etc.
Linkedin eksempel kompetencer

The main theme

Before you embark on updating or creating your LinkedIn profile, consider how you would like to brand yourself. Choose the professional competence that is to be the main theme of your profile. Which abilities do you have? What is your goal? Which skills are to be your selling points? Have a look at other profiles in the industry or company that you would like to apply to. Which skills do they emphasize?

Search optimisation

Look at job postings in the industry or the professional area in which you would like to work. Which skills are in demand in relevant job postings? They are typically the words searched for when a recruitment consultant searches for a new employee. Use the same keywords and skills throughout your profile - then you have a better chance of standing out in searches.
Linkedin eksempel profilbillede

Profile picture + video

Select a professional and lifelike profile picture for your LinkedIn profile. Dress as if you were going to work. The background should be neutral - or perhaps show you in a working situation. And there is no harm in smiling and looking co-operative. You can emphasize your personality with a profile video.

Background picture

Select a background picture (also called a cover picture) that reflects your professional profile. You do not need to be included in your background picture - the most important thing is that the picture visually supports your skills, and what interests you on the professional level.

Linkedin eksempel overskrift

Headline – how can I help?

A good headline should state what you can and will do. In your headline, you can use both skills words and job descriptions. Use more words and think of tasks that you can solve. The recruiting person must be able to decode what you can help a potential employer with by looking only at your headline.
Linkedin eksempel om

About – elaborate on your skills

Elaborate on the skills you mention in your headline. Write briefly and concisely and using “I”. The words you choose to write in your "About" also function as search words, so you should think in terms of job assignments and professionalism. When you write this section, contemplate what you can help with and which values your skills can create. Why are your skills relevant to an employer?
Also add three times #. They also function as search words.
Linkedin eksempel uddannelse og erfaring

Experience – show your career path

When you fill in work experience, you must write company, title and mention your most important job assignments, areas of responsibility and results in a bullet list, under both present job and previous jobs. Remember to use your search words and the main theme.

Education – what is the advantage of your education and continuing education?

Briefly state your education and any relevant supplementary training. Which value can you create for a company based on your (supplementary) education? Also use your search terms here. You should also use your search words here. Also add subjects and courses of relevance to your profile.

Skills and endorsements – emphasize what you can

You should add many skills as they also function as search words. You can also choose to prioritise the order of your skills. You can also add your IT skills here.
Your network also has the possibility of endorsing you. It is good network practice that you endorse your network before you ask for endorsement.

Get more out of your LinkedIn profile

When you share, like and comment on posts and articles, you become more visible. If you write short articles showing your professionalism and interest, you will become even more visible. You can also participate in discussions in relevant groups (search for keywords from an area that interests you to find relevant groups).
You can change the address for your profile so that it becomes personal (dk.linkedin.com/in/YourName). You do so by clicking "Edit public profile and URL" in the top right-hand corner. It is called a vanity URL.
If you have been travelling, had a sabbatical year, been on leave etc., you can add career break to your profile. You can find it under experience.
Under your profile, you can find ”Edit public profile”. Here you can choose which sections should be visible to people you are not connected with.
Follow companies and organisations that you are interested in working for. Is there anyone in your network who is employed by the company? Also, have a look at the profiles of the employees and check which skills are included in their profiles.
You should not ask for a job, but obtain knowledge about a workplace, an industry or working environment. Inquire as to how you can also contribute to sparring.
You can create your profile in a number of languages. Click in the profile section/supported languages/add profile in another language.
