How to write notice of resignation

When must you hand in your notice of resignation? What should it contain? Get the answers here.

There are no requirements for how your notice of resignation should look, what it should contain or be handed in. In principle, you can just say to your boss that you are giving notice to quit.
But we recommend that you hand in your notice in writing.

If you hand it in on a piece of paper, you should have your superior sign for receipt, so that you can document that you have in fact given notice.

If you send the notice of resigntaion by email, make sure to print and keep a copy so that you have documentation.

We also recommend that you hand in your notice of resignation as late as possible. If you give longer notice, you may risk that your employer requires you to take holidays in the notice period.

Notice periods of the Danish Holiday Act:
  • Main holiday, 3 consecutive weeks, requires 3 months' notice.
  • Remaining holiday, which are the remaining 2 weeks, requires 1 month's notice.
  • If you have any days from the sixth holiday week, check the rules in your collective agreement at mithk.dk. If you are not covered by a collective agreement, you must check your contract of employment.

EXAMPLE OF resignation letter

Brønderslev, 31 March
Dear Jens Jensen
I hereby give notice of resignation to resign on 30 April 2020.
Yours sincerely
Kristine Kristensen

NB! Sometimes dissatisfaction is at the root of handing in your notice of resignation. Perhaps  you were not given a pay rise, or you were not allowed to change your working hours.
But you should never write that in a notice of resignation. Keep it short and concrete as in the example above.
